Why 12 step programs don't work.

How to Judge a Drug Rehab?

March 1st, 2006 by Terry Keith

It would be great if alcohol and drug rehab centers came with report cards. Then you could simply look at all the grades and pick the place which is strongest in the areas you feel would help you best. Not so simple. Thousands of rehab centers and little to pick and choose from in reguards to information. What if you can’t find someone independant who has been there to give you an oppinion? Is there a way to find out for yourself, if the rehab is one you will be able to continue down the path of sobriety.

While we all may not be able to determine the best rehab program we can all judge if a business runs itself well. I well run business is hard work. It makes sense that no one would go through all the hoops of doing all the business things right and then neglect their rehab program. Go visit the facility. Is it clean? Is the kitchen clean? Are the food storage areas spotlessly clean. Ask to see a sample chart that hasn’t been filled out yet. Do they have organized forms for intake that make sense? Ask to see some outlines of all the lectures? Are they neat and well organized. Do you see checklists? Look at a client room. Sit in on a lecture. Are the handouts neat? Is it organized or does it seem to be the “topic of the day”? Ask the other clients if the place is organized, are they getting regular counseling? Good businesses will exude organization and cleanliness. Any body can judge these. Rehabs are businesses and good rehabs will have the characteristics of good businesses. We all can tell these apart.
