Why 12 step programs don't work.

Drug Rehab and Family Support

March 1st, 2007 by Terry Keith

When a family member is in an alcohol or drug rehab it affects everyone.  Addiction is a set of circumstances that touches everyone in the social circle of the person.  The stress and financial burden placed on the family at this time can be enormous.  Besides having to stay stong and focused to support the family member going to the rehab center, the family needs support and care for itself.

There are just not enough resources for family members.  There are a few books, but not enough and many times they are too generic.  When we are stressed, we all need specific things to do.  Perhaps some weekend seminars could be designed for families to attend.  In it could be taught many of the ways to decrease stress that are available today.

Ways to maintain healthy boundries would also be and excellent topic.  Another often overlooked topic are ways to make your home safer with someone with an addiction.  Methods of reducing cues in the home are valuable too.

Perhaps a teleseminar on how to assist families with a family member with an active addiction would be of interest to people.  Teleseminars are easy for people to dial into, and for the most part are a more inexpensive method of learning.  Also it might be possible for drug rehab centers to make the part of their program that would be valuable to the families available through this medium.

  1. I agree with you. Teleseminars would definitely help since it is an easy and convient way of educating family members about addiction. Addiction sufferers would recover and be rehabilitated faster if they had the full and INFORMED support of their family. Teleseminars offer a great way to QUICKLY and CONVENIENTLY educate family members regarding the causes, issues, and bases of addiction.
