Rehabutaunts and Drug Rehab

June 1st, 2007 by Terry Keith

I heard a commentator use a new term a couple of days ago.  He was referencing celebrities coming out an celebrating a stay in a drug and alcohol rehab center.  I believe he was specifically talking about Britney Spears, however it could have been one of the others.  He call them "rehabutaunts" in reference to the old debutante balls they use to have for young women of society.

I'm sure his reference was one of tongue in cheek, looking for humor in the public's interest in the time spent in drug rehab by famous people.  However, I see nothing wrong with being a "rehabutaunt".  What is wrong with dealing with unwanted behaviors and wanting to improve them?  We celebrate a lot of other things in our lives, so why not celebrate the completion of a drug and alcohol rehab program?

I wish Britney Spears well, as I wish anyone working ro deal with an addictive phase in their life.  I also thank her for letting the world know she went to rehab.  Addiction has had a stigma for far to long.  Maybe if we have more openess and a few more "rehabutants" celebrating the joy of leaning new skills and behaviors in a drug rehab more people will seek help much sooner in the addictive cycle.  Drug and alcohol rehab programs work and no one should live a lifestyle that damages themselves and others around them when help is so close at hand.
