The Irony of Organisation in Drug Rehab
February 2nd, 2008 by Terry Keith
The problem with change in a drug and alcohol rehab center is that sometimes it is counterintuitive. What you think works doesn't. When it comes to freeing up your mind and your spirit, this is certainly a case where this may be true. I think most of us what to be free to think and dream about what we really want. I also think most of us what to be free enough to mostly do what we want, when we want.
The irony lies in that most "freedom" lies in structure. It is the structure inside a drug rehab that give you the space and freedom to change. Structure and discipline take care of all the little details that bog us down. By kicking back and pretending we are free, we sacrifice our freedom. Also if you allow structure and discipline to make most of your choices, you are not worn out of making decisions and will give the choices you make more thought and care.
You see it is because you are willing to give up many choices about when and where to eat, give up choices about drugs inside a drug rehab, give up choices about when to go to group in rehab, that you have the mental energy to tackle real questions. What is your purpose in life? What do you want to acccomplish in you life. Pretty fair trade for giving up the time to eat breakfast don't you think? Whe you leave a drug rehab center you also might want to think about keeping a lot of these habits in place. Structure around when and want you eat. A system to keep information organised in your life. A regular exercise routine with pre-set times. Freedom is found in not having to make too many choices. Giving up a portion of your life to structure is the simplest way to find this freedom.
